Safety

Safety is the first priority of every police officer. You keep your community safe. You keep your team safe. You keep yourself safe.

It starts in new recruit training. For up to six months, you learn everything you need to do your job safely. You master all your tools – firearm, Taser, baton, pepper spray – and you know when to use them. Your driving skills sharpen and you learn disarming techniques.

But it's not just physical. You develop critical thinking and problem solving skills too. You'll study policies and procedures on how to manage various situations. By using your brain, you rarely have to use your weapon. Then, before ever hitting the street, you're tested to prove you've got it all covered.

Once you know how to do it, you put your safety knowledge and skills to work – but not alone. For your first few months, your field training coach is there to mentor you. If you do something unsafe, they let you know – quick.

Even after formal coaching is complete, you're still not alone. Your team is always there. You'll never walk into a potentially volatile situation without a partner. If you suddenly find yourself in trouble, your radio safety procedures will get backup there fast – and lots of it.

Really, safety training never ends. New tools and technology show up constantly. Training standards endlessly evolve. You diversify and upgrade your skills and training year after year.

You're safe. Your partners are safe. Your job is safe.
